Subdued Names   By Sami Khalil

Ponderings…

My exact shadow had a resurgence of subdued names.

Vigilant in eventides, his silence rifles through me, in nonchalant manners.

But time rushed past us, blessing the emptiness of waiting lines.

As we hold the shield high, with hollow arms, hostages seep through our breasts.

Chance after chance, he had taken me across elapsed heartbeats.

I could not dissolve my bruises that weighed valiantly in my apprehensive rendezvous.

I might have drifted in self-sufficiency, lofty to many in its concluding smiles.

With tears in each corner, I idolized the marbled sky, feeling more than breaths laden with faceless partners.

My softer heart was a free verse, flowing from generous hands and across fences.

Each time I mouthed a narrative, guilt came forward, blustery and throwing stones.

I had not but scarlet roses to throw back and, a flurry of gasps.

I hastened to the blue curtains to close them.

My exact shadow and I became accustomed to subdued names…

A read it, and I was going to copy and paste lines....

"My softer heart was a free verse"
THIS poem is why I consider you top-shelf
Just. F*****g. Scary. Good.
"My exact shadow had a resurgence of subdued names."
I am not even sure, still, how you give such vibrancy to everyday thoughts...
Reminds me of Bob Dylan, my namesake...
Nature, sounds, beat, rhythm, feeling, sight, smell, touch...
I have praised it before, and I am here again...
MANY artists seek a "unique" or "different" way of approaching the world
So that they can give it back to those who partake, in a "unique or different way"...
However, I am a firm believer that the through the prism of normalcy, everyday, and that which we use most often...
this is what carries the strongest messages...
Just have to look harder...

'My softer heart was a free verse, flowing from generous hands and across fences.'
In that wonderful line I perceive your creative free spirit and mindset; but also, of course, the true function of free verse as a non-restrictive poetic form; though I must remind fellow poets that free verse may be non-restrictive when compared to rhyme but there is a poetic methodology in its right application (when properly understood by a studious and passionate poet).
One thing is for sure; whether free verse, blank verse or rhyming poetry, we poets have a wide range of poetic forms and devices in which to express ourselves. A poet must be versatile.

Bravo!!!

Whoa! Thank you so much Jacob for this great review and summation. You are honored.
You have a really interesting way of putting words together. It caught me off guard and then hooked me and reeled me in. The meaning of it echoes through my being and calling on me to recognize my own exact shadows when the read was over.

Brightest blessings as well...
this is so interesting, Sami....some days i just want to send my shadow out to mingle with people, and keep myself hidden inside.
i like the idea of Blue Curtains...with blue being sadness...
guilt, throwing stones...not feeling kind to others...questioning my humanness...i have done that more times than i can count.

A most intriguing poem Sami , images of those who live in their own shadows trapped that can only come out through writing like poetry, their only escape route comes to mind. A multi faceted poem indeed.

Wow, aren't we all, a poet's heart is not always rhymes and rhythm, its free verse, a free flowing water cascading into words of hope and love despite sadness and darkness wall up... Well done brother..
