The Kingdom Of Darka...Some people like to fit in a space or be defined by the circle of influence. Others are free spirited, exploratory and wanting to live beyond.

The Shimmer                                  by Sami Khalil

The Kingdom of DARKA!

There was a chill in the air! Bed ridden and in the twilight of his life, his grandfather  handed him a skeleton key of ivory-colored bones, to unlock the cellar of his capacious castle, on his 18th. birthday only, so to recover a hidden treasure, gifted to him.

Any other time, under any effort it will not unlock. Days passed in waning patience, for his birthday was not doomily far off on the horizon.

The grandson carried the sorrow of death in lugubrious brooding but anxiously hoping to claim his due gift. Night dreams became the embers of escaped shadows needed to be rediscovered.

His expectations were wrapped in colorful parades of happy thoughts. Albeit his world became smaller and smaller, he needed to explore the sealed unknown.

He could no longer blink but in memories and glance except in cogitations. An immense interest can devour reality to beyond imaginings, shape-shifting truths of reality.

He remembered his grandfather’s words that the cellar contained a rich lode of knowledge which will enrich his life in valuable deposits of days ahead.

When the clock struck twelve at his birthday, a full moon hovering above the night sky, howls of wolves heard in the distance, active bats flopping their wings in the belfry, he unlocked the cellar’s screeching door easily, massive as it is, entering, going down the winding stairs. To his amazement, no treasure box was seen, but a bewitching array of white chalk lines on the floor; circles, squares, triangles and a straight line. The shimmering sign on the wall stated that before crossing the straight line, one must experience all other geometric shapes!

His mind wondered in fields of invisible things. Now, his reality was stitched with dreams of natural flight. Those geometric shapes made him (aware) of graphic paradigms.

The square was like a prison he had to flee from all rasping whispers in his head; too much to handle. The circle gave him a soothing feeling of happy family, friends

and even school instructors. One downside, he could see the drowning of his bother in a canoeing accident on their lake, which left an indelible mark on his psyche. The triangle took him to the glorious pyramids of Egypt, its wars and triumphs, its majestic achievements for mankind’s, but his main fascination was Cleopatra and her sorrowful death. It was unbearable to partake in her suicide.

He felt trapped, strapped, horridly wanting to escape, so he jumped across the straight line to emerge through time’s vortex to the “Kingdom of Darka” or appropriately called (The Shimmer) for its beautiful houses shimmer in the sunlight, built by precious stones of all sides and colors. At night, it gave reflections of imbued light. He saw majestic fjords in many formations, high peaks descending to emerald plains and bridges lightening up like rainbow colors. Neither troubadours suspended their wonder nor visitors of outer planets. Everyone could fly at will. All were of the same age. Death was a very distant relative they never knew. All were shimmering. Every morning, they will all gather to awaken the hills and meadows lest be reduced to dust.

He thought to himself, “Happiness must exist only in dreams and freedom in nature.” Only time will tell in Darka. He became a shimmer being. A new citizen!

I wish the layout of this story was a bit longer and not cut into five words per "sentence."
Other than that I loved reading it! It created a beautiful story in my head, full of vibrant colors. This story made me drift off for a while and I loved it. Great work, Sami! :)
