It started with a dream...A Story by Samantha LynnA contest entry about how how funny it is the stuff works out in the end.
“I had a dream last night.” I say to my friend, staring at the ground. We are both currently sitting outside in the courtyard, eating our lunch, and sitting in the soft grass, under the warming sun, watching everyone around us live their lives normally, like we aren’t even watching them.
“Really?” She seems skeptical to ask me what it was about, “Do I even want to know the details?” “Oh, God. It was nothing like that.” I wave my hands at her to strengthen my point, “I am not that nasty, but it was actually kind of nice. I didn’t want to get up this morning.” I am quiet for a minute and then I can see that she is visibly anxious as to what it was about. “Well?” She suddenly shakes her body, and it makes me jump some, “Are you gonna tell me what happened? Or you just gonna leave me hangin’ like this.” She says. My gaze turns over to a boy. He is tall with dark, almost black hair that just falls over his eyes, and he sits alone. I am guessing that she noticed me by the big grin that spreads across her face. “OMG,” She says kind of too loud, and everyone around us in the hearing range turns to listen in, “You totally have a thing for the loner guy.” She says, followed by a loud screech of excitement. My only response is denial. “I totally do not.” I say, and then cross my arms over my chest. “Then why are you looking at him like that?” She glances over in his direction, so do I, and we both see him doing something under the table, probably texting so a teacher won’t catch him. “I am not looking at him in any way. He just so happens to be in my line of view.” She doesn’t believe me when I say this so I just give up trying to think of excuses and revert to eating my lunch as if she isn’t even there. “Why don’t I go talk to him for you?” She goes to stand up but before she even gets close to on her feet, I pull her down hard without even thinking and she just looks at me. “NO.” I say stern and serious. “Fine. I won’t say anything to him.” “Thank you.” “So you do like him.” “No.” I say and then turn my gaze to the fascinating appeal of my sandwich; she probably still doesn’t believe me, but at least now I don’t have to worry about her doing something embarrassing. After a couple minutes of silence I decide that I am never gonna finish this lunch so I offer to take up her trash and after she gives it to me I make my way to the huge trash can across the lot. When I start making my way back I notice that she is no longer sitting under out tree and I feel the instant panic mood set in when I see her sitting with the loner guy. What the Hell? I told her not to do that. My instinct tells me to go over there and pull her away without question, but then I stop myself. What if he really does like me? I stand there, in the middle of the field thinking it over, but the thought doesn’t last long because soon I see him smiling and for the first time since he has been here. My panic mood sets in again and I rush myself right on over and, not really meaning too, I yell in her ear. “What the hell do you think you are doing? I told you not to do this.” I yell at her. She bites her lip as if to push down the smile she is trying her hardest to hold back. “I just came over her to ask him for some gum.” She says, lying to my face, and then he pulls out hi pack and she takes a piece. He holds the pack out for me, but I refuse to take anything that belongs to him. “No, thank you.” I say, but in a mean, bitchy way. He just puts to pack away and looks from me to her, and then back to me and smiles. I look back at her. “Come on. We have to get to class.” “We still have a couple of minutes le-” I stop her before she says anything more. “Come on! I need to go to the bathroom.” And at that we are walking away from his table, my face red with embarrassment, and after grabbing out stuff we make out way towards the bathroom. We don’t say anything the whole way there, but once inside, hidden from the world, I just feel like yelling at her until my voice goes out. “What did I tell you?! I said that I didn’t want you talking to him! And what did you do! GOD! He probably thinks that I am an idiot now!” She just smiles at me. “Well, do you want me to tell you what he said?” “Of course not! I do not want to hear about how he doesn’t like me at all and thinks I am a loser for thinking so. NO!” I say and then the bell rings and I am on my way to my locker, not even bothering to say good bye to my best friend. Once at my locker, I turn in the combination and open the door to grab all the books I need for the rest of the day. I stick them all into my shoulder bag and go to close the door, but something stops me. I catch a glimpse of something shiny and green. When I pull it out, I find that it’s a gun wrapper. My heart jumps up in my throat because I know who this is from, but why would he just stick a random piece of gum in my locker? I decide to not let it go to waste and while unwrapping it I notice some writing on the inside. It’s a phone number and some words at the bottom. “I think you over reacted. Call me sometime to tell me about that dream of yours.” That’s what the tiny piece of paper said. I fold it up and stick it my pocket, close my locker door, and glance over to the end of the hallway to find him standing against the wall, just staring at me and smiling before he just abruptly turn and walks in the other direction. Maybe I did overreact a little. Best dream ever. © 2012 Samantha LynnAuthor's Note
