WHERE ONCE A HEARTA Poem by Salvatore ButtaciBetrayed by love, she crams her mind with his final word, tossed seconds before the closing of the door. Inside, where once she thrived, where once a heart leaped for joy, now reign only silence and darkness. There is nothing left to give. The turning of a doorknob, the way he averted his eyes like a man concealing shame, the curl of his lip, then that “Goodbye” signaling the start of loneliness and the incurable dread of living unloved. She sits now at the window, auburn hair disheveled, her life in ruins. Out there, circling high above a dying world, love flaps dark wings. #
