Regret

Regret

A Poem by Sam Dean

Poison on your tongue has never tasted so bitter,
so hard to swallow as it slides bleach slippery down the back of your tongue,
honey left too long to rot under the beating sun caged in your ribs.
And you remember when it was saccharine sweet,
half a cup too much sugar spilled into your lemonade pitcher,
but now it's all half dissolved at the bottom,
you’re oversaturated,
taste it grainy between your teeth,
tainted summer memories trying to find room where there is none.
