Sustainability and How to sustain it !

Sustainability is a concept which has been widely popularized for all the right reasons, but what exactly is it, why is it needed and is it a planet saving measure?

As we all known our planet isn’t as resource laden as it once was, mostly because of our excessive use of Earth’s treasures. We have become dependent on Non-Renewable sources of energy, with coal alone contributing 60% to India’s energy production. It is predicted that by 2100’s we might run out of all our reserves and be left with scarce traces or nothing of these once reliable resources. Mother Earth is sicker than ever as we, her children make her choke on the fumes we make, dry out her water supply and destroy her beauty and breathe by cutting down trees. The cure though can be still possible, in the way of Sustainable Living and Development.

Sustain means to maintain or hold and sustainability is the marriage of the people and the planet, where we use the resources wisely and efficiently so that the future generations of inhibitors can live a prosperous life and the Earth can “sustain” us for a longer time. This concept has become a trend now and more and more people have picked up the idea and are working on making the very-much-then Theoretical Dream, a reality.

How does this sustainability movement work? That is a very good question. It isn’t a single project that will give way, as to counter the numerous problems there need to be equivalent solutions ranging from global campaigns like Avaaz to local ideas which we see run in our city. It is important to understand that it is not something that a few activists can accomplish; it is a concept that needs the backing of the entire world, which has made it so difficult. The advantage though is large businesses have capitalized on the trend and worked for the better of the environment, even if for publicity, consistently. The government has also recognized various NGO’s to spread the word about the initiative and the government is also giving grants to businesses and people themselves to help the environment, while people themselves are starting to see how the condition is at red alert and with the internet around the stage is there for initiatives to go global, which has caused an increase in the activity of people involved.

Although we have the backing of the world right now as sustainability is a trend and the “in-thing” for all the people, it remains to be seen if it is our solution because as the root of the word says, we must sustain these resolves, we must sustain our solutions, we must sustain Nature because of we, Mother Nature’s children don’t, then who will?
