"

Ezra Levi was finally graduating. He was finally going to become a fully- fledged messenger. It was going to be so awesome. What he wasn't counting on was being paired up with his exact opposite..

Chapter two: Ezra

It had finally come-Graduation day. The day I had been waiting for, for ten years, (A.K.A my whole life). I was so excited. Who would be my partner? What was my score going to be? What was my first mission going to be? Or better yet- Where was my first mission going to be?

Most graduates were at least eight years older than me- legally adults. The youngest pair before me was Garret Renly and Tobias Smith, and they were both 13 when they graduated three years previously.

The reason I was graduating so early was because I was what they called a ‘prodigy’, our job was really orientated on remembering messages and keeping our mouths shut. It helped that I never forgot anything that I read, heard, smelt or saw. It also helped that I had some major trust issues going on- so I barely talked at all.

I was standing in a long line of graduates waiting for my name to be called. We were in a place called ‘the octagon’, which was basically just a large, octagonal ballroom with an inbuilt stage. I didn't have any parents in the crowd that was seated behind us " barely any of us did.

Messengers were picked from birth and had one reason in life: to deliver the message. Heaps of us died during our one reason in life, so the kids that were picked usually didn't have family that would miss them, or, you know, care that they were dead. Although, some of the kids graduating had parents who were messengers -messengers that thought it was a great honour to follow the family calling- or something along the lines of that.

‘Dexter Polland!’ our co-ordinator shouted, up from the podium.

Dexter was a freakishly well-built sixteen year- old, with a mop of black hair and the most deadly glare I’d ever seen on a kid before. His normal expression was ‘ I've swallowed a lemon no-one help me’, but as he was called forward he had something resembling a smile on his face.

‘Dexter, please sign here and be welcomed into the ranks.’ Said our co-ordinator, Mr Fyne, in the same monotone voice he had said to every other graduate so far.

Dexter went forward and signed the little slip of parchment, inducting him into all messangerness for evermore - or that was what I was guessing. I hadn't been up there so I hadn't seen what was on it yet.

I knew what happened next though. It had happened to all the previous graduates right after they signed the slip- time to get a partner.

What happened was, throughout your schooling, your teachers and supervisors monitored your every strength, weakness and behaviour. Every test result, every success and every failure went towards who would be chosen as your partner. Your partner would be with you on all your missions for the rest of your life- if they died on the job, then you went solo.

Usually partners were picked to make up for the other’s weakness, like in the case of my friends who graduated last year, Finn and Harry. Finn was smart, but lacked any social skills what-so-ever and Harry was a little bit lacking in the upstairs department- but made up for it with her charm " together they balanced each other out.

It was Dexter’s turn to get a partner now. He wasn't smart, but he wasn't dumb either, he was probably the top of the class in anything physical and he wasn't shy. But he was rude, really, really rude. So, I thought, they've gotta pair him up with someone nice.

I kinda felt sorry for whoever had to be paired with him- he wasn't the easiest guy to get along with in my experience, and when you got partnered up, you were stuck for life.

But then again… they didn't have to wait in line any-longer; they could just go up, sign their name and be off.

Mr Fyne cleared his throat, and stated ‘Mr Polland, based on your test scores and the many professional observations our staff have taken, your partner has been declared as Ezra Levi. Congratulations boys.’

Ezra Levi….but- but that was my name…OH NO WAY!
