a distance off

a distance off

A Poem by Matthew L. Arcelay

a distance off the shadow
intimately watching thoughts peeled forward and back
you pull out that feather trying to tickle a smile
all i can manage is a smirk .. it's how i feel
rolling in the dirt with the right moment at the wrong time
tainted pains talk about how bad we're knotted up
i feel as though we've been too set back
caught up in images of how it should be
could be
would be
but too afraid to make it just be
camouflaged persuasions take it one step beyond pretense
as toothy grins appear to laugh at us like hyena moving in
to devour all that makes us
kindred
