countdown

countdown

A Poem by Matthew L. Arcelay

dive six stories
and remember to flap your wings
as i count backwards ..
looking for an impact
ten
when did i loose perspective
was it when i chose to be different
nine
i remember black and white conforming masses
marching in step to the star spangled banner
eight
my stomach growling .. meatloaf and potatoes
then a hefty helping of you better do as i say
or...
seven
only memory here now is sirens and white masks
heavy breathing
tubes extended and a tear
six
muddled voices and a smile slightly faded
i'm unable to move ..
five
in the shadows he tells me it's not time
time i ask and he says only dream
four
everythings in color
i reach for a hug where none are stored
and hit the floor
three
only description a box standing by me and a door
buzzing to be let in
two
pounding the pavement looking for answers in empty scrapbooks
trying to take back yesterday by crashing into tomorrow
one
flapping my arms wildy
trying to break away
hoping someone catches me
falling ....

Very rich. I experience the meltdown on the way down! I find your countdown structure intriguing.
