why she cried

why she cried

A Poem by Matthew L. Arcelay

laugh as they did
they never knew the true perogative for why she cried
she told me once with her eyes that she hurt inside
but the pain she felt wasn't hers
for although each word slashed deep into the heart
it was for them that she bled
shadows looking on with just a hint of hope
puppet reflections in the light with curled lips
as if to say i want to smile give me reason
the heart unsteady beating to the unchanging seasons
to her every word fell like treason
with just a crust a of bread and a cage to believe in
a confidant for hopes and dreams
drawn hastily on sidewalks in chalk
i knew her plan
rushed recklessly in the night
but how can you build paradise on heartbreak and tears
when the devil walks swiftly at your heels
skillfully erasing blueprints sketched on sidewalks with chalk
shaking
she cries for them
at least
thats what she told me once
with her eyes
