Beths hope part 5

Beths hope part 5

A Chapter by sarah

“It is so beautiful”, I said.

“Well, it’s your birthday gift”, he said with a big warm smile on his face.   “It’s just something I did in my free time.”

It was quite beautiful, and very unexpected. Mr. Becker was a kind man but he was never one to give random gifts, and while my birthday was not very far off, John’s birthday was many months away, so in a way him giving John and I gifts for really no reason at all was a little worrisome.

Mr. Becker looked tired and weary and looked at John and I and said with a kind smile “Well, it’s getting late, so you better get home before the snow gets too thick.”

“Okay, and thanks so much, Mr. Becker.”  I smiled at him and walked out the door.   John followed behind.    As I walked through the snow, I could hear the sound of screams in the distance, and a siren going off.

Chapter 2

What is this World coming to?

The same things kept happening, all week long.  Every day Anne would stand up on the platform in class  with a bruised eye, and normally a cut lip, and every week she tried to explain what happened but no one would listen   I kept wondering why. Sister Helga seemed to be trying to block everything out. One day I went to the shop to find Mr. Becker listening to “the loud man”, on the radio too.   Mr. Becker had a confused look on his face.

“Hello”, I said, trying to make him more aware of my presence.

“What?” he said, a little startled.  “Oh, hello Beth.  What brings you here this fine morning?”  He turned the radio off.

“Oh, nothing in particular.  What are you doing?”

“Just checking up on the latest news, that’s all.”

“Oh”, I said.  “Well, is it good news?”

“Well Beth, I don’t really know.   I suppose this Hitler man…well… I guess I just don’t trust him, that’s all.  There’s something about him I really don’t like.”

“Really?”  I said, trying to understand his lack of trust.  “He said he was going to help us and make this a better place.”

“I guess”, Mr. Becker said, but he didn’t sound convinced.  “Well, I guess if you trust him, I guess I’ll try to, at least.”  He smiled at me.

“I guess I trust him because father does.   Even so, I have to admit, he gives me the chills, and I’m not sure why.   Father always says he is here to help us.  Why we need help, I am not sure.  Father tried to explain it to me but to be honest it didn’t make much sense to me.  But then father never lies, so I guess we must need help.”

Mr. Becker gave me a doubtful look, which I didn’t understand.

Then John ran in with tears in his eyes.  “My…my friend Phillip, he…he...”   John stuttered.   “He and I were playing ball, and they took him.  His parents too!   They took him in a truck with sirens going off.   Loud sirens.”   John couldn’t continue.

“Oh John”  I said terrified.   He was mortified.  I’d never seen him so upset before, even when he was angry about what happened to Anne.  Mr. Becker came bringing him a glass of water.

“Now John”, he said calmly.  “Tell us what happened”

John’s face was red, he took a drink, then a deep breath.  He began.  “Phillip and I were playing ball.   These men came in a big truck and picked him up.  Phillips parents were already in the truck. Phillip screamed and called my name.  I moved forward to grab his hand, but one of the men put a gun to my head, and said that if I moved, he would pull the trigger.  So I stopped, and they took him.  They drove away laughing.  I could hear him screaming my name repeatedly.  I couldn’t do anything but wait until I lost sight of the truck.  Then I heard a gunshot, I ran in the direction the truck had gone, and I saw what looked like a bundle laying in the street, I thought it must have fallen out of the truck.   I couldn’t see what it was, so I ran over to it.  It was Phillip, lying on the ground.   I put his head on my lap and screamed for help, but nobody came.   The last thing Phillip said to me was that they had his parents.  I told him that I knew that, but I don’t think he heard me.”  John’s voice trailed off.

Very emotional and moving, I really enjoyed this mortal, a very good write on the war here indeed, your choice of words was good and also you make it very believable, especially since it's from the perspective of someone younger. A lovely, deep read here, impressive, I'm looking forward to more of this~

A write on WW II and the heinous Hitler. I love all writes related to WWII so i will surely follow this. You write this from a child's perspective. That's great too. Good job here...
