54thA Poem by RachaelThe 54th Massachusetts. One of the bravest groups of men I have come to know. It was a suicide mission and they knew it. Their commander stepped up and volunteered them to fight, saying that it would be an honor. As the 54th walked through the lines of regiments, men tipped their hats and cheered. Like no one had seen before. Colored soldiers leading the Union army into battle knowing they would most likely get killed. Row by row they marched toward Fort Wagner. Closer and closer, hearts beating out of their chests, heads up proud. 70 yards, 69, 68... anytime the shooting would begin. 67, 66, 65... we are ready. 64, 63, 62... the commander begins yelling a command. 61, 60. “CHARGE!” Gun shots, canon rounds sound like nothing ever heard before by these men. Like death before it happened. Row by row men got shot down yet no one gave up. Each step you could guarantee five people dead. As they approached the trench, people were getting protected, and they waited. Night came and the commander gave orders. The whole time they were waiting, the 54th was getting bombarded with shots and had to duck every ten seconds. On his command..... “Charge!!!” He was the first one out and killed almost immediately. Because of this, soldiers got up the courage to make the charge on Fort Wagner. And forever more, they will be remembered. © 2008 RachaelAuthor's Note
