One Word

One Word

A Poem by Zach Colgate

You part your lips to speak,
and in such beautiful tones,
say that word
that I find
to be so frighteningly defined.

With your tongue that I once tasted
when we slipped secretly down the stairs,
our heads spinning,
you say that word
that,
like a wedge,
wiggles its way in between
you and me.

That word . . .
That wall . . .
Simultaneously,
it splits us,
separates us,
and holds us close to one another.

You part your lips . . .

Please . . .

. . .and with your sugar tongue . . .

. . .don't say it.

 . . .but you do . . .

“Friend.”
