May I See You To Your Floor?

May I See You To Your Floor?

A Poem by Zach Colgate

I am elevator music.

That’s as good a name as any

Because I know you will just forget.

The steel door will slide shut,

And you will go about the business of your better,

                                                              brighter

                                                               future.

I have little to offer –

A few notes,

Little rise or fall,
And a tendency to trail off . . .

I am elevator music.
That’s as good a name as any
Because I see that you have somewhere to be.
I am only passing the time,
And you are only pretending to listen

To avoid looking at the man next to you
With bad breath.

Ding!

Damn . . .

Its your floor.

Perhaps . . .

Perhaps I’ll see you again

After a disappointing day

And sing you back

          down

                             to the ground.
