A Boy and A Sidewalk

A Boy and A Sidewalk

A Story by Ryan Mulroy

So this little boy is walking down the sidewalk one day.
He picks up a piece of chalk that had been resting in the crack between two concrete tiles.
He begins to draw on the sidewalk.
First, he draws a circle with two dots for eyes and a crescent mouth.
Then, he draws a stick for a body, a crooked line that thickens in the middle because of how he leans into his right arm while squatting over his art.
He draws the legs and the arms with little circles for hands at the ends of them.

I watch the boy from my bedroom window.
I pay attention to every little thing about the sequence of events of his drawing, especially the end.

Once he is finished drawing, he throws the chalk in the air and screams, "Eureka!"
He begins to dance around his stick figure, singing a song.

The birds chirp and the cars whiz by and the dogs bark.
The boy dances. He sings.

I sit and watch.
Oh, to be young again.
