[Everyone remembers their first]

[Everyone remembers their first]

A Poem by ryan

Everyone remembers their first

High school sweetheart.

Melissa Handelman,

Your name proves your capability.

But what we embrace

More than a name, or

A face--is the smell;

It’s the scent that we treasure.

The essence of an all

Too forgotten lover--

Leaving the face to melt away

Like a candle dripping wax.

But unlike this candle

Loosing shape with time--

The perfume lingers

As a memory of what once was.

---

Its 2:23 am and this little

Something curls up next to me--

Eyes as big as a sad puppy’s

Carrying the weight of perpetual

Second place around her slender

Shoulders.

She finds solace in my

Unslung arm--telling

Me how she is and about

The men that brought her

Down this far.

Smoothing out the knots

In her hair--I unravel

An affinity of a once

Towering love affair.

It’s ok--I tell her.

It’s going to be just fine.
