i'm the David Koresh of heart beats and breaks

A Poem by Mike Melanson

beat me down with a bus pass
and a stack of yellow bills, pink slips,
paper cuts between my fingers.
and chinese water torture - drip. drip.
dripping of flourescent lights on my forehead
from nine to five. f**k me in the ear, why don'tcha?
you found every other orifice
and hole i can think of.
beat me down with sidewalk skirmishes
and silent, late-night phone calls.
set up a speaker Stevie Wonder would hear
and play back my daily thoughts - drive
me out. i'm Noriega, i'm the David Koresh
of heartbeats and breaks.
barricade me in a beer bottle, behind
a cliche cloud of cigarette smoke -
i can cower behind these elbow patches,
they're larger than you think, all smooth
and suede, suave and stereotypical.
break me down with candy canes and puppy
dogs, with how-it-all-should-be, bore
into my chest with moonlight, brain me
with the glorius light of sunbeams and cut
my throat with your ear-to-ear.
break me open with a hug.
i'll get up again with more middle
fingers than Gneesha.
