Shadow Trees

Shadow Trees

A Poem by rutherford

In the long part of the day
Slanted shadows
Escape the trees
And roam the streets
Covert emissaries from the sun

Birch and pine turn
sun to shadow
coiling roots below
binding their branches
Ever tighter to the earth

Over in another part of the galaxy
A middle aged star
Cast violet shadows
Down someone else's leafy street

"the long part of the day" for me represents middle age...the longest part of our existence...and there is that time in our life where we cast the big shadows...maybe on those we love and who love us...perhaps they start to notice us more---and in their leafy-ness realize that they have many summers left and we have left...so we become bound tighter to them...and then comes fall---that ending when we shine most brightly in their lives---as we cling to that tree for one last moment in the sun...
