THE EVENING ROAD HOME

THE EVENING ROAD HOME

A Poem by rutherford
"

I used to have to long distance commute that lasted as much as two hours each way. And so I have a few more to get out of my system. Thankfully I've moved and now I ride a bike.

"

Not the grinding tension of the morning

the need to be on time

Morning carries a coiled energy

like trying to blast free from

the gravitational force of your home planet

The evening journey home

is like falling back to earth

In the shadows of late afternoon

you see others on the street

long distance commuters

looking for the road home

their energies spent.

Ulysses returning from the war

Lewis and Clark trekking back from the Pacific

Napoleon marching through the Russian snow--the fires of Moscow at his back

Honors earned

Duties done

Vistas explored

Battles lost

You carry your story home

with just enough gas in the tank

to cross the threshold

to dogs and family

and thoughts of tomorrow.

Good comparison of the ways to and from work - even on my short, twenty minute ride in the morning, I am tense, but the road home is bringing me to my furry family and a good meal... Nice window on Life here.

A very nice piece of Americana I would say. Thank God your work day doesn't last as long as Ulysses.

The world is a flashlight (torch) and you the battery. The wall-charger of family and dogs makes the lights change from blinking red to solid green. How many charge cycles remaining? I always date them with indelible marker; some last much longer than expected while others appear to have been abused in some mysterious fashion - possibly too many quick charges and/or overheating from internal shorts. The analogies can be frightening... really. Crap! Sorry... didn't mean to write a poem.

Well, you made that commute a bit interesting of a ride...the phrases in the middle got my attention with the history events...and that about sums it up with commuting each day...a long haul and very time consuming...to say the least...

This was a wonderful little diddy! Having dealt with the highways and biways in a semi truck for 8 years... I can feel this piece really well. For me...it was just getting through rush hour and out of the cages of the down town cities... cept at night... loved seeing all the downtown scapes.

Thanks for sharing your creativity! The piece brought forth a sense of peace and chuckle and it's unique form and flow made for a very enjoyable flow or words.
