THE EVENING ROAD HOMEA Poem by rutherfordI used to have to long distance commute that lasted as much as two hours each way. And so I have a few more to get out of my system. Thankfully I've moved and now I ride a bike. Not the grinding tension of the morning the need to be on time Morning carries a coiled energy like trying to blast free from the gravitational force of your home planet The evening journey home is like falling back to earth In the shadows of late afternoon you see others on the street long distance commuters looking for the road home their energies spent. Ulysses returning from the war Lewis and Clark trekking back from the Pacific Napoleon marching through the Russian snow--the fires of Moscow at his back Honors earned Duties done Vistas explored Battles lost You carry your story home with just enough gas in the tank to cross the threshold to dogs and family and thoughts of tomorrow. © 2013 rutherfordReviews
