PrologueA Chapter by Ruth Anne GarciaA tasteThe wind slapped and shoved as she beat against it, long limbs but short strides. Strong as a tree trunk, so she’d been told. The strength she thought she possessed was being tested, she wasn’t sure she could make it. Stomping as her feet sank into the earth, she gasped as quick breaths yielded more panic. Eyes stinging, tears drifting with the gusts, her arms hugged tightly against her chest. Rain drops began to fall dropping the temperature. Blurred vision compromised her confidence, there was no way to see her destination. All she knew was that she had to get away, run and never look back. A gripping feeling in her gut had her pushing forward. All she knew for the last two years was almost snapped, as long as she kept moving. The ground was sinking, the rain pelting, her heart hammering in her ears. Mouth dry she desperately gaped at the rain, there had to be enough for just a sip. The dirt clinging to her skin began to slide off as the rain picked up, now drenched and shivering, she felt her footing change. What was muddy sinking earth becoming hard as rock terrain, her feet faltered. A pause would mean defeat, so she started to run with all she had left. Sobbing now, she could hear the distant echo of her name. Pain in her ribs and blisters on her feet, she increased speed. A light shown in the distance above, she knew it was her destination. Crying out she heard the snap of the rifle. Eyes wide with fear, hair matted she clang to the last shred of hope. In an instant her hands began to beat against the door. The rain was loud and thunder was rolling, she desperately needed to be heard. Echoes of her name and the hammering of her heart increased instinct. Glancing behind her she saw nothing but rain, though in the dark she knew he was right behind her. Slowly edging closer to her capture. © 2017 Ruth Anne GarciaAuthor's Note
