Childhood & CommercialsA Poem by James O'Rourkechildhood memoriesI remember being a child Eating cereal and watching TV Morning cartoons filled my eyes When a commercial interrupts A woman is smashing eggs With a frying pan Her fervor growing more and more With each swing Translucent yellow slime Hanging off the pan Oozing down the walls I can't help but feel sorry The hens Nestled in their coop Listening intently To the TV in the farmers house They cluck to laugh tracks Of evening sitcoms And smile when reassured That Dawn dish soap will clean Their feathers Of any unforeseen oil disaster But then that crazed woman Weapon of choice Raised high over her head In triumphant glee Snuffs out the hens happiness She swings madly BANG! Eggshells split and shatter The hens flinch SMASH! Yolks splatter The hens exchange looks Of wide-eyed terror Feathered mothers scatter Frantically searching for a place to hide Their unborn children One hen buries hers Under as much feces as possible Another hides hers in the rafters One even put an egg underneath the rooster He was surprised at first But shrugged and tended To his newfound duty Another spoonful of cereal Reaches my mouth My cartoon returns From commercial break I really hope those eggs Make it © 2015 James O'RourkeAuthor's Note
