Freedom

Freedom

A Story by William Rupp

In a meadow there is a sapling and a river. One particularly sunny and beautiful day they are watching the birds flying freely in the air above and the sapling and the river get into an impassioned discussion. They argue quite persuasively that it is unfair the birds are so free and they so constrained, the sapling chained to a stick and the river hemmed in by banks. How much higher the tree would grow if the simple stick were thrown off and how much faster the river would flow if its oppressive banks were swept away! So they decide to put into effect their just liberation that night with the help of a storm. During the night the wind helps the sapling shake itself so much that the stick is loosened and falls away and the rain helps the river flood and burst its banks.

In the morning the Sun rises to the glorious new beginning. The tree now free of its stick is bent over and become a crooked bush. The river now free of its banks has flooded the meadow and become a large puddle. The meadow is now a bog and all the birds have flown away.

This is for those who think themselves constricted but later find out this is what gave them and the world their strength, growth and glory.
