Monologue from "Alive"A Story by Runo N. SavelI tend to begin my short stories with an internal monologue from a main character. This one is from my upcoming short story "Alive."
The lights of the
city seemed to compete with the lights from the comrades of the night sky. I
stood at my bedroom window looking at this competition between the universe of
the city and the universe outside the city. While I appreciated the natural
beauty of the universe, something about the city amazed me. I looked up at the
stars and contemplated what else could be out there, but I was always drawn
back to the city I called home. It was concrete, I knew it was there. I had a
small sense of security when I thought about things like that. There may be a
whole universe out there, but there is only a small amount of it that I could
explore. I think that’s what always drew me back to looking at the lights of
the city, why the city’s lights seemed to always defeat the lights from above
for me every time. The city itself was complex. Every person had their story to
tell. At night, just as many stories are written as during the daytime, perhaps
more. The day is devoted to what we must do to live, but the night is devoted
to what makes life worth living. Night, itself, is a lot like life. They both
have immeasurable beauty, but they can both be scary as f**k sometimes.
