Introduction to "Lessons Learned"
A Story by Runo N. Savel
The opening paragraph to a new story titled "Lessons Learned."
I had to run. I had
no other choice. If you were me, you would have done the same thing.
Admittedly, it was an extreme decision, but there were extreme circumstances.
There was no other way. Had I stayed, they would have never let me lived with
myself after what I had done. They never would have let me simply carry on and
try to forget the horrible things that I had to do to save myself. They would
have never let me forget. Whenever I would have seen one of their faces, I would
be met with a scowl or a grin so manufactured their jaws would have permanently
locked into that position. No. I didn’t have to deal with that. So I ran. I ran
as far away as I could. I ran to a place where they wouldn’t know my name. I
ran to a place where they would never know what I had done. I ran to a place
where I could carry on and forget who I once was and what I had done. I ran to
a place where I could start anew. Or so I thought.
