Stranger

Stranger

A Story by Ruby Moon

One day, you wake up and look around you. Not knowing where you are, who you are, what you are doing there... Even if there is someone right beside you, that person seems so far. You realise that you don't know who he is, what he means to you, his values, his dreams, his hope... a stranger to you. Does it make a difference if this happens tomorrow or a few years down the road? When you don't recognise that face in the mirror anymore. The way the expressions come and go like a movie... except that you are looking in a mirror. How did you get so familiar with these masks, this expressions? They are not yours, they are like actors... actors specialising in different areas. Look! There is the grimace, the smile, the crying one, the angry face... Over and over these strange faces flesh pass in the mirror, till you want to just hit it and smash it out. Pound it over and over again... how can your body betray you that way? Leaving you caught, imprisoned in your own flesh. A stranger, even to yourself. How can you bear it? No matter how far, how fast you run... you are still in the same cage. Is it worth being alive? In this condition? What is there to look forward to? Where is the reason to live? You don’t even have the past to comfort you, to wrap round like a safe, warm blanket in a cold room.
