Tearing Down the Walls

Tearing Down the Walls

A Poem by rubie

Tearing Down the Walls

Emotional bricks

shattered like the

twin towers

ferociously
laid to waste

marking the spot

where after so many
years and fears

the walls built to
protect the ever-frightened
 child

were ripped down

How many times

I chose to pay my dues

in the precious light laden

currency of spirit

only to be fooled

into believing in a

chimera of safe harbor

deep within those walls

so often the bat

so seldom the feather

and unbeknownst to me

stuck in place

the only step

embraced by that dance

I can stand up now

on creaky knees and

smell the sweet new morning

wafting gently toward me

high above the rubble of

yesterday’s self-destruction

still, better late than never

What a beautiful spirit you have, Rubie :) A foundation clearly still in tact for rebuilding. Bravo!

You are so welcome my dear! ~SP
oh wow, this is so strong it makes an impact.
We put up all these wall to protect ourselves, our hearts thinking they will protect us but to be so protected means also letting no love or light in!

This really does make you think !
Great piece! :)

these lines really tore at me...part of my "chimera of safe harbor" was a grandfather who molested me until i learned to cry so loud he became afraid my family would hear and no longer be able to ignore what he did...lord how it hurt and i buried it so deep it took more than 25 years to look at it and weep for all that was lost and the cost...and the old man was dead by then...

Wow, the strong and potent walls of protection. Who doesn't have them? And they are not wrong, just sometimes we get wronged by the right one..

Very well said, moonskittles!!!
Thank you for your review!! :)
Love the format of this piece, Rubie... there is such an intensity to the first three stanzas that I felt the pressure in my chest increasing...i experienced the emotional crash with those fallen bricks; felt foolish believing those walls would provide safety; sensed that life brought hard times too often and not enough sweet moments... until... that last stanza which alleviated the stress and anxiety of the self destruction... how elegantly you pen the coming of a new day, better late than never... love this!

It really moved me, Rubie... you are always welcome, my friend!
yes, better late than never....but those walls build up so solidly, it takes a major attack of trust to bring them down.
