I watched
a playful pup have the
time of his young life as a village
of prairie dogs played him for a fool
He rushed
from mound to mound only to
be distracted by the yips of another
taunting pup far
enough away to be safe and close
enough to tempt
I
wondered in my own youth how often
I had run toward the call
of a chimera only to
find myself alone with an
armful of wind
From the
vantage of years and
lessons learned I laughed at the
chase re-chose
the stillness and the
haunting minor chord that is
