Too Much Room

Too Much Room

A Poem by rubie

i am younger than really old houses

with decrepit shutters shutting out the winds

of romance---

a mansion of youth

with so many unopened doors

i need you to be the key

unlock me.

no one's really lived here in a

very long time.

this is just pure romance, runs off the tongue like hot treacle on warm waffles....and the metaphor is genius. a house with no occupants, simply for lack of the key...someone holds it. beautiful.......

welcome!
I find romance even in really old houses. To the poet, all is romance; not only love and life but desire and death as well. I feel as if we are always young but our bodies wear out. Could it not be so with houses as well? But the function of a house is to be a home. And as a certain poet once observed, "There is all the difference in a human being who is in love and another who is not as there would be with two lamps; one that is not lit and another which is. The lamp was there all along and it was a good lamp. But now, it is putting forth light and THAT is its true purpose."

I am so glad you enjoyed my poem. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Nice. A very strong metaphor. Sometimes standing, empty houses can be so sad, a shadow of former happy and loving times. Brings a tear.

Best regards,

Rick
