Looking out into the night

 

     “…dedicated to a dear friend…”

 

When looking out into the night

Our future we can't apprehend

And yet when we do look behind

There stands our family and our friends

 

It matters not what we have done

No, not the money or the fame

Not accolades or shining prize

With only these we'd just be plain

 

It is the love that we acquired--

This our protection through our strife

This can't be taken from us, no

This is the value of our life

 

In this I have been fortunate

I have so much, I really do!

It brings me smiles and gives me hope

And yes, my love, I do mean you

 

And yes, I mean my family

And yes, I do mean all my friends

This all the treasure that I need

It gives me life beyond an end

'Tis a friend indeed such as this that helps us realize and appreciate that in life which is important. As you have expressed, smiles and hope is added, a treasure enough to be considered as "all I need"! Love does indeed conquer all!

With Covid-19 knocking at our door, I am revisting WC and some of my reviews. Most cherished are the reviews by friends that are no longer with us. And I mourn the loss of Marie. I mourn the loss of BLBrown, and I mourn the loss of Mark Teague, who I actually have met several times when he travelled to Southern California. These were wonderful people that have been taken away. There was no reason except perhaps that it was their time. So, in fact, there was no reason at all. But we should all learn from this. Life is fleeting. It is here, and then it's gone. Perhaps Covid-19 will teach us how anyone can be plucked from our company without rhyme or reason. We are all morals doomed to die. So we need to love while we have the chance. It is a short chance, but just enough to let the desert flowers bloom in their glory before they wither away. And they are so beautiful. And they are so worthwhile seeing. They need and deserve to be cherished. If not, it is your loss and not theirs.

"It matters not what we have done," is such a powerful phrase and can have many meanings. Gandhi said, "Whatever you do in life is irrelevant. But you must do it anyway for no one else will do it for you." I believe he was thinking about the vastness of our tiny world, and even more so, the responsibility we all have to ourselves to find our calling, our purpose. Also, with the passage of time, all is eventually lost to antiquity when you think about it...even poems...when you think about what people will read 10,000 years from now.
