Wave

 

Lone brave wave upon the ocean

Adrift midst endless sea and sky

Do you ponder your existence?

Or merely swell, then crest and die

 

What’s Life’s purpose?  I’ve no notion

Adrift midst pointless dreams and sighs

At Life’s end dissolves all pretense
All lies depart as Night draws nigh

 

Serene wave upon the ocean

Teach me peace and not to cry

For death’s terror provide defense

Don’t let Life’s riches, fear deny

 

For Life's sorrow grant me potion

And for my days contentment buy

With self-ego I will dispense

Disperse like wave, not asking why

Reminds me a bit of "Waves Across My Heart," which you gave invaluable input to. I thank you again for that.

Just finished reading The Wave: In Pursuit of Rogues, Freaks and Giants...was very good. I know you know this, but the scientific explanation of a wave includes that it is really energy moving through water that is already there. Having once been a sailor, I'm always a sucker for thoughtful poems/stories such as this. Fluid, dynamic, powerful yet serene, an ocean wave makes for a great life-metaphor.

I particularly liked the line "Do you ponder your existence?/ Or merely swell, then crest and die". The awareness of the anthropomorphizing within the poem is refreshing, and adds to the themes of observation and questioning.
