Shaky Steps and Decided Directions

Shaky Steps and Decided Directions

A Poem by Ryan

I watched you as you stood,

Realized it was something I needed

Saw your long strides across the living room floor

Realized it was what it took to get somewhere

And with your guidance, with your encouragement

I made my first steps,

Unsteady, uncoordinated, and not always where I intended to go

But I continued to watch you

Seen how smoothly you strode, how directed your steps were

With purpose, decided direction

And I continued to work, to steady my own steps, find my own balance

Watching how yours flowed with such direction

And as I gained mine, we found it veering ever so slightly from yours

This frightened you and you tried to steer me the same direction as you

Time has passed, but this habit seems yet to

My steps no longer shake, and my direction still veers just slightly from yours.

You still attempt to guide me on your way

While I have understood, that it is not my way

And hopefully soon

You can let my hand go with confidence

That where ever I end up

It was still you that taught me how to walk

And that lesson does not go forgotten

Even if my direction

Isn’t quite the same as yours
