RELIGION RUINS EVERYTHING
By R. A. Merritt

The malice of gods unseen

The malice of millenniums long past

The evil one can readily conjure

Be hard to come close and surpass

No matter which faith it claim

No matter where it grew

No matter those it proclaim

Naught but hate do they spew

And despite their proclamations

Of love and hopeful measure

Trust not what they seek

In the end it mostly be treasure

Onward Christian soldier

Onward the Jihadist they screech

Onward bring destruction

Their walls we soon will breach

And if they choose not conversion

If they don’t kneel to our ways

We bring them but carnage

The end of their spiteful days

Callous be our churches

Hatred in our mosques resound

Explosions rock the streets

To hell we all be bound

What do we know of gods

What claim do we have of worth

That a deity would reveal himself

To those that dwell on this earth

For I can’t imagine I fail to understand

What good be in this animal

This blood soaked human man

None have said it better

Than Hitchens long past and seen

That god is unworthy

Religion ruins everything

It make one willing to murder

It make one easily to war

It make one distrustful

And millions to curse and abhor

It make one turn on neighbor

It make one turn on their friend

It make one to desecration

It make one wallow in sin

And don’t dare your contradiction

Don’t ponder with rationale

Don’t question these words of ancients

Those ancients so wretched and foul

Though fools we know they be

Fools from that Bronze Age

Fools we certainly see

Filled with superstition and rage

What fear they of modernity

What fear they have of wisdom

What makes them wish to dwell

And languish within this prison

What think you when some time

What will with it they replace

When we upon some time

Encounter others in the distance of space

Will we adopt their gods

What will it be we say

If he not be the one we cherish

And daily to whom we pray

Will we call for conversion

To Jehovah or Allah they knell

Will we continue our wars

The unbelievers to curse and to kill

Or will we at last come to see

What Hitchens had clearly seen

That god is unworthy

Religion ruins everything

Author's Note

R. A. Merritt
I truly miss reading and hearing Christopher Hitchens a man most certainly the equal
to Doctor Johnson and perhaps the greatest wordsmith of my time. I particularly enjoyed watching him make the religious provocateurs look like complete buffoons when they dared to debate him on the merits of religion.
