Monsters Will Exist Wherever They WillA Poem by R. A. MerrittMetaphorical monsters that devour man MONSTERS WILL EXIST WHEREVER THEY WILL By R. A. Merritt Monsters will exist wherever they will Within the dark forest or over the hill Or down in the water or up in the trees Monsters will exist wherever they please And should you perturb them in any way They might alight and upon that day They might alight and eagerly thus Do various evil and make a great fuss They might crawl forth and angrily stew To bring 'bout carnage to others and you So wary you should be when they nearby Lest others and you in sorrow should cry Lest horror to come and and fear instill For monsters will exist wherever they will And if it is your duty to feed these beasts You better keep to it not break the lease For if you won't do as you agreed To carry forth captives for them to feed They will come up forced aground And screech aloud their hungry sound And spread they will throughout the land Devouring all, every man They trundle forth into the night To satisfy their appetite For human flesh is what they crave That alone them to stave That alone will keep them down Out of sight and low in ground Down there deep down below Down in the darkness we surely know And if you should deny them what they need No more willing as you agreed To toss them others, for them as food Anger shall swell be their mood No hope will exist in the maddening shrill For monsters will exist wherever they will
