Pour Me That Drink

Pour Me That Drink

A Poem by Roshan Nair
"

A tired evenings musing

"

Pour me that drink my stranger,

Your eyes don’t seem that different.

I am not the victim of your gentle water,

The path to the counter; waltzing no danger.

The chairs they talk of the bands crying,

The doors swinging to a leavers touch.

The smoke on the ashes; yet to drift away,

Into the air that leaves, to return never trying.

Pour me that drink my friend,

Your voice is the most familiar yet unknown.

I wish to be your tag, just to see the view,

From the perch holding flows with no end.

The carpet it seems dustier since I came,

The glasses show the lights, dimmer than they seem.

The railing seems cold and fingerprinted,

Like call to angels who’s seen more nights in fame.

Pour me that drink my love,

Your skin has the glow of a thousand yesterdays,

I am no longer worried thinking of our tomorrow,

Hand in hand, with the brightness in our brows.

The squalor gets too comforting,

The tables are your neighbours and friends.

The drinks not so cold anymore, to keep my heart

That’s at the bottom already, from sinking.

Pour me that drink foolish mirror,

It’s your reflection you’re talking to.

I am here, waiting on my chair and no other.

You blame me for the night, if you can.

The day smells different to my eyes,

The streets smiling to the sounds of laughter.

Its eight hours for the killing now,

Waiting for the opening sounds about wise.

The change as it progresses is something people will relate to because most of us who drink at a certain point, drink to drown ourselves in it. Sometimes maybe the line distinguishing one from the other can be blurred too.
I am not a fan of metered writing but I like your choice of words, and presuming you are a musician, I think this would make a good song. Dark undertones... Just jogging my brain..

"The day smells different to my eyes,
The streets smiling to the sounds of laughter.
Its eight hours for the killing now,
Waiting for the opening sounds about wise."

Damn Roshan... this was one mesmerizing read. I have never seen such imagery in a poem before. A jaw dropping piece indeed, my friend. This may come out a little cheesy, but I actually got goosebumps as I was reading this, and I do not think it was from the cold!

I noticed a rhyming pattern you have going on in the poem. It was hard to catch it, but I have observant eyes. I have a soft spot for rhyming, you see. Just by reading this, you got me excited to read more from you.

I admire how you experimented with both happiness and sadness. I find this something hard to do, so therefore, you impressed me.

Thank you for constructing such a masterpiece!

The way you have described certain things in this poem is really good - a picturesque description. The flow is smooth.

"I am here, waiting on my chair and no other.
You blame me for the night, if you can" - I see a hint of frustration coupled with despondency. Sad, yet beautiful. Good write :)

This poem made me feel sad and lonely.. I liked the way how you described things from an attentive prospect of eyes that know it is late and there is just the speaker and their thoughts. thank you for RR :)

I like the bar poetry. Men and women hide little with liquor or beer as the salvation.
"Pour me that drink my love,
Your skin has the glow of a thousand yesterdays,
I am no longer worried thinking of our tomorrow,
Hand in hand, with the brightness in our brows.'
I roamed the bars for 20 years. They are my best stories now. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.
