Any One I Care to BeA Poem by Rose of GondorThe makeup artist Adds one last touch The dancers line up In the wings behind me I take a deep breath Everything seems to slow And then I step into the spotlight And everything changes suddenly I was no longer the gawky girl With sweaty palms Standing backstage in a Suffocating costume With each step across the stage I transform a little more First my posture and my view And then my heart Suddenly I was she Giselle, the spirit maiden Distressed for her lover Desperate to keep him alive Each step gives me strength And I give each movement My entire being The fabric of my soul I float across the stage Leaping, whirling, flying In Abrecht’s arms I never wanted to leave And then the music stops Just as quickly as it had come Somehow I had gotten backstage Still in my partner’s arms But now he was only another dancer Not the fairytale duke he was on stage And suddenly I was just a girl again Just another ballerina among many “That was phenomenal!” my coach says. She claps me on the back And gives me congratulations And I smile I smile because today, I was Giselle I smile because I had become a spirit I smile because this was who I am, Who I always wanted to be I smile because On stage I am anyone I care to be © 2012 Rose of GondorAuthor's Note
