My love, You Need to Wake UpA Poem by Rose of GondorThe heat of his hand Burning through the thin fabric Of my crimson gown On the small of my back I lean into him Without thought For the hour of night I let the seconds slip His smile takes my breath away And my heart flutters madly A sensation stranger to me And yet familiar “Come, my love,” he whispers Into my ear As he takes my hand, “Let us dance.” I shiver with delight and Curtsey And place my other hand On his shoulder Silence in the moonlight We move to unheard music Followed and led Every step in perfect unison Twirl, dip, slide We glide through the shadows In the chill of spring Yet there is only warmth Clumsy as I was I felt nothing But grace When I danced in his arms Tired as I was I felt nothing But energy When I danced in his arms Empty as I was I felt nothing But complete When I danced in his arms And so we waltzed We tangoed We reeled And waltzed again All through the night We danced And danced and danced And I never wanted it to stop And then finally We took the final spin His arms around me I had stopped, but my head was still spinning “What is happening?” I groan weakly Dizzy, dizzy, dizzy This perfect world had suddenly Turned upside down He said nothing But held me closer Spinning, spinning, spinning Everything was spinning “You have to leave,” he tells me And his arm around My waist loosens, “The night is almost over.” And then suddenly My vision blurred I groped blindly for The man that had danced with me “But I don’t want to leave,” I protested Reaching into the darkness I didn’t want to leave this lovely world, “I don’t want to go.” Chuckling fill my ears Anger courses through me I want to punch something How could he laugh at me like that? “My love,” his voice echoed in my ear Gentle but firm And a feather-light touch fell on my cheek, “You must wake up.” And then my vision cleared I was in my room The light was on A storm raged outside I groaned and sank back into the pillows Willing myself to fall back asleep Hoping the same dream Will snatch me up again Tears welled in my eyes But I tried to conceal them As Mother bent down And inspected my tear-stained pillow “Oh, my dear,” she whispers, “It’s alright, darling.” But I just ignore her And sobbed even harder That day was long I hoped for sleep I hope for that same dream I want to see him again But I never do He was my dream My vision My knight in shining armor But I am content With my memory Of our dance I am content Content with knowing Knowing, with every fiber Of my soul That we will meet again And his soft voice Gentle but firm Light as a feather Is forever imprinted in my mind I’ll never forget The way we danced The way he held me The way he spoke my name “My love,” his voice echoes in my head Through the chaos of the day Soothing my soul, “You need to wake up.” “Wake up, and come back to me Wake up and realize this is where you belong Wake up and stop living in misery. My love, you need to wake up.” © 2012 Rose of GondorAuthor's Note
