              "Take a breath," He said, his tattooed hand covering mine as my chest rose and fell unsteadily, shaken by the shock of everything. I tried to steady my breathing, gripping the edge of the table, trying to calm my mind. "Shhh," he murmured, "If you play, you play for keeps. Take the gun. Count to three." I could feel the sweat running down my neck, soaking my hair as I trembled. My hands, now clammy with sweat too, slowly reached out, taking the gun shakily. My heart drummed against my chest. I was terrified. Why wasn't I leaving? I should go. I should slam the door shut in his face. I should scream at him for making me play this stupid game.

      But I just went along with it, swallowing hard as I stared at the weapon that could end my life.

     "Say a prayer to yourself," he told me gently, his tone was soothing, "Close your eyes. Sometimes that helps." I stared at him for a moment, and suddenly a thought as horrible as he who inspired it entered my mind. He is here. It means he's never lost. I gulped, squeezing my eyes shut. God, what was I doing? If Mother knew...

      My brain was screaming at me to stop, but somehow, I knew I had to do this. I had to. I knew I must pass this test. My heart fluttered, thumping frantically, trying to tell me to stop. I raised the gun to my head.

      

     "Don't do it," I could almost hear my parents saying, "Don't pull the trigger. You don't want to die this way. So many won't get the chance to say goodbye." But I just had to. It wasn't an impulse, it was a need. I needed to pass this test. I pulled the trigger. For a moment I could hear blood pounding in my ears.
