Tears I Cry

Tears I Cry

A Poem by Rose of Gondor

I heard you got out of town

To make your fortune

I heard you got hooked up

With a big city girl

I heard you got famous now

You’ve got money and goods

I heard you found your path in life

In your acting and filming work

And now you’re coming back

Back to our small town

And I can’t help but wonder

Why you’ve come back here

She clings to your arm

Fluttering her lashes

She’s wearing heels and lipstick

And a skin-tight sequin dress

She shows off your baby

A plump little thing

Resting in a dark blue bundle

“It’s a boy,” she says

I wonder if she knows

That she’s not your one and only

I wonder if she knows

In your eyes, she is just another girl

I wonder if this time

You’ve learned our lesson

I wonder if this time

You can be true to her

I met her at the church

And when she shook my hand

I saw the diamond ring

On the fourth finger of her left hand

“I’m a friend of your husband,” I told your wife

“I’ve never heard him speak of you!”

Your wife replied, astonished

And I thought drily, I wonder why?

And now you’re here

In the middle of the night

There was a knock at the door

I open it and peered out and there you were

“Why are you here?” I ask

And you reply, “To see you,

Of course. I’ve never forgotten you.

I still love you, baby.”

For a single split-second

I stood wide-eyed

I almost stepped out to embrace you

I longed for your kiss

It hurt so much

Watching you

Hearing your words

Knowing they were lies

I wanted to believe you

And tears filled my eyes

But I steeled my own will

You won’t get to see the tears I cry

And I shut the door in your face

I couldn’t let myself be this weak

And even as you turned to go

I sank to the floor, sobbing

You ripped out my heart once again

This is why you were here

To test the strength of my will

And if you found it easy to bend, what then would you do?

Would I have fallen further into darkness?

Would I have repeated my mistake?

At least one thing I know for sure:

You won’t get to see the tears I cry

You think you can mend all this

But before you continue, let me ask you

How many hearts have you stolen now?

How many hearts will be broken?

And when at last you stand

Old and aged and troubled

Would you be sorry for your sins?

Can one heart pay for a hundred?

You can tear me down

You can throw me to the floor

But I’ll never give in

You won’t get to see the tears I cry

I am what’s real

And this is my life

You can’t control me, and

You won’t get to see the tears I cry
