![]() chapter 7 in the darkA Chapter by Rose ElizabethChapter 7: In the Dark “Hey guys!” I heard Laura shout as she ran up to me from the parking lot. “What’s up Lily, I hear you’ve been waiting here all afternoon?” Joey laughed from not far behind. “Not really, I thought you two were coming here but when you didn’t we just caught a movie,” I smiled. “So you probably don’t want to see another,” he grined. “Yes, we’re fine for another one,” I said perky like, “Right Will?” I grinned at him. “Sure, I’m game,” he smiled as we went back to the front doors and opened one for us, “ladies first.” “Sure,” Joey laughed as he went in first. Will gave me an unexcited shrug and a grimace. “Just let it go,” Laura muttered, “we both know he’s got way too much estrogen for his own good.” “What was that?” he shouted back at her. “Nothing babe!” she shouted. “That better be it.” Will walked in behind me and we followed him through. “Laura! Give me your wallet!” “Hey man, I’ll pay for it,” Will tried to push past us to the ticket booth. “No, let Laura get it. She likes taking care of people,” he smiled. “Joey! You know I don’t have any money!” “Yeah but isn’t this your dad’s credit card!” he laughed mercilessly as he stole her wallet and pulled out the card. “But that’s only for emergencies!” she screamed trying to get it back. “Come on now,” Will said sternly as he grabbed the wallet from Joey’s hands. I watched as the two momentarily sized each other up. Joey was fairly muscular but I think Will had him beat when it came to being able to take someone else. While his muscles weren’t highlighted by an almost orange tan like Joey but they were still there. “I said I’ll pay for it,” he told him sternly as he gave Laura her wallet back. “Fine,” Joey huffed after a moment, “as long as I don’t have to pay for it.” Laura closed her eyes and walked away after him. I sighed and looked to Will. “Thanks but you don’t have to do that, I’ll pay,” I sighed fishing in my purse. “No, I said I would pay, I will,” he smirked as he pushed me out of the way and pulled out his credit card. “But you already paid for a movie for both of us how will you pay for all four of us?” “Unlike you I don’t spend my paycheck all in one place,” he smirked after telling the ticket person what he wanted to see. I grinned in Joey’s direction because it turned out he’d forgotten to tell us what he wanted to see. We ended up with tickets to a comedy. “I do not spend… what’s your job?” I asked suddenly realizing I hadn’t found out. “Don’t worry about it,” he grinned as he took the tickets and walked away. “What are these?” Joey asked in outrage as Will handed him us our tickets. “Tickets big boy,” he smirked putting his arm around my shoulders. “Yeah I know that but to what?” “You have something against comedies?” “No I just thought we’d see something more exciting or… bloody,” he stuck up his nose at us, “but I guess it doesn’t matter because we’ll just be making out,” he smirked at Laura. She gave a sad smile and nod. “Well isn’t that exciting,” Will muttered as Joey pushed on into the theater with Laura behind him. “Thanks for putting up with him,” I whispered. “If he doesn’t fix his attitude soon I might have to do something very bad,” he chuckled. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked a little worried. “Don’t worry about it,” he sighed. “No, I want to know what’s with you!” I exclaimed. “Hey lovebirds,” Joey shouted back at us, “The movie’s this way!” he pointed in the direction he was going. His other hand was wrapped tightly around Laura. “We will discuss this later,” I hissed at him threateningly as I ran off. “Whatever you say,” he chuckled and followed. We ended up sitting at the very back so their kissing wouldn’t disturb so many people. Laura and I sat together, Joey sat beside her and Will sat beside me. They began kissing immediately while Will and I sat in awkward silence. “I hope this is good,” he sighed. “I’m sure it will be,” I whispered. “You look tiered.” “Yeah well, I’ve been going nonstop for awhile.” “Why don’t you rest your head on my shoulder?” he smirked. “Why don’t you gag me with a spoon,” I muttered and rolled my eyes. “What’s wrong with that? It’s not like we’re touching inappropriately or anything.” “Yeah but that’s where you’ll take it,” I sighed. “Whatever, I’m not going to make you but if you like you can,” he whispered with a smile. “You’re not going to do that cheap trick where you yawn and put your arm around me are you?” I sighed. “I’m not that cheesy, if I’m going to put my arm around you I’ll do it straight out,” he beamed. “Good to know,” I sighed. “You have been warned,” he chuckled softly just as the previews started. Sitting so close to him in that dark room I kept thinking of all the things he’d said to me, especially what he had just offered. At this point I couldn’t help but think about how nice it would be to rest my head on his shoulder and just relax but I knew I couldn’t let him win that small victory. It was also hard to concentrate because Laura was no longer in her seat. “Why don’t you like me,” he whispered. “I never said I didn’t,” I whispered bitterly back. “Ok,” he whispered sadly, never looking back at me. I sighed and really thought about all that was happening. So what would be the worst thing to happen if I gave him this small victory? He would take it too far… but was he really the kind to do that. He hadn’t given me any reason to think he would. What could be the worst if I didn’t? He could give up… I guess that’s what that was about… I closed my eyes finally, cleared my head of thoughts and let my head fall on his shoulder. Holding hands was fun. It felt right and whole. But with my head resting on his shoulder I felt peace. I felt like I belonged curled up with him and I couldn’t help but want more. He was like a drug to me. Now that I’d gotten used to him there was no letting go. I felt his head lean up against mine and sighed. He sat up for a moment and placed his arm around my shoulder before putting his head against mine again. I didn’t complain for once. It felt so nice that I almost slept through the last of the movie. “Well that was extremely boring,” Muttered Joey as he stood up and stretched. Laura was back in her seat with her eyes closed. I noticed her shirt wasn’t buttoned as far as it had been. She looked over at me and noticed Will’s arm around me and gave a huge grin. I closed my eyes and turned away. “Come on Laura let’s head to your uncle’s place,” he yawned again as he headed down the stairs, Laura followed with a sad look. “Well that was fun,” Will whispered in my ear. His other hand came over to hold both of mine. “Yeah that was defiantly an experience,” I sighed as I stood up and stretched. “I’m glad you got something out of it,” he chuckled and yawned at the same time. I blushed but couldn’t say anything. “What? No snappy comebacks?” he laughed as he stood up. We both started walking down the stairs. “So where are we going now?” “To Charley’s, I suppose,” I whispered. “I hope you don’t stay this quiet,” he grinned and I gave him an evil glare. We walked in silence out of the theater. It was starting to get dark and I thought about my father. I pulled out my phone and sure enough I had three missed calls. “Hold on a sec I want to call my father and let him know where I am,” I smiled at him and pulled out my cell phone. “Sure,” he smirked and then leaned up against a small wall with a poster on it. “Hello,” he answered anxiously on the first ring. “Hey daddy, you called?” I said sweetly. “Yeah, where were you?” “I went to the movies with Laura,” I sighed. “Oh,” he said a little guilt ridden, “Well did you have a good time?” “Yeah I did, we’re going to go get something to eat at Charley’s,” I tried to make it sound like a question but it didn’t work out that great. “I suppose that’s alright, I’m working late again but I still want you home before ten alright?” “Yes daddy,” I smiled. “Good girl,” he chided, “I’ve got to go. Love you, bye bye.” “Love you too, bye,” I sighed and then closed my phone. “I love how you avoided telling him you were with me,” Will smirked. “Well I’m not going to give him a heart attack in the middle of him working,” I snapped, “Besides if he knew I wouldn’t be allowed out of the house again.” “Which means we won’t be able to see each other any time soon?” he asked half amused half worried. “Exactly,” I sighed. “You say that like it’s a bad thing,” he chuckled as he wrapped his arm around me. “Yeah well…” I sighed. “See I knew you’d warm up to me,” he grinned. “See if you keep doing that I’m going to have to pull you off of me,” I snapped. “Well I guess we could keep this from him for a little while longer,” he whispered, ignoring what I said. “Yeah, I guess we could… wait keep what from him?” I exclaimed. “Oh come on!” he half shouted, “You put your head on my shoulder I thought we were through with this whole avoidance thing.” “Well sorry for not knowing that doing that would give you the total wrong impression!” I shouted pulling away from his arms and heading towards his car. “You better watch it or I won’t give you a ride, I’ll just abandon you here!” he shouted still playfully as he ran after me. “See this is what I don’t like!” I shouted turning on him. He was closer than I expected but I kept on. “I don’t like feeling like I owe you or I depend on you! You give me rides you pay for my ticket and you think you can hold it over my head! Well I have news for you! I can call my father to come pick me up and then when I tell him why I was stuck I’ll be grounded like that and I won’t have to put up with you anymore!” I was seething as I spun around and walked up to the passenger door. When I yanked at the handle nothing happened which made me madder. We stood in silence and surprise and disappointment were all over his face. “Would you open the door?” I said weekly. He stood still for a moment and I panicked because I thought he might actually make me do that then he pulled his key out and unlocked it. I sighed but sat down on the warm leather seat. “I know…” he sighed, “it was wrong to… tease you like that but I thought… I thought we were okay now.” “I know… I thought so too but… it just feels weird,” I whispered. “New experiences often feel that way,” he chuckled softly. I stared out the window silently as he pulled out and drove away. The half moon was rising fast as we pulled into the parking lot. He pulled his keys out of the ignition. He didn’t move so I didn’t either. “Look, I know this is weird but…” he sighed still looking at his hands in his lap, “but there’s something about you… I can’t escape it.” “Oh so that’s why you keep following me,” I huffed playfully. “It’s not funny,” he said sternly. I looked up at him in surprise and he looked back at me, his eyes nothing but serious. I couldn’t bring myself to pull away as he slowly came closer. Without my permission my body leaned into his. It felt like we were fingers being looped around with invisible string, closer and closer until we touched. I closed my eyes as our lips meet. I feel the electricity flow and I can’t help but gasp. He leans back slightly and gives me a knowing grin. I touch my lips and think to myself that was entirely too sort. I close my eyes and let my head fall back. His hand reached for mine and I sit back up. “It doesn’t have to end there,” he whispered leaning back in. I shiver at what that might mean but I get closer again. This time it lasts. His lips softly caress mine, his hands wind around my arms. I melt into him and my hands tangle in his hair wanting him closer. Before I can get used to it he pulls me away but gives me a soft smile. “Later,” he whispered, “We’re expected.” He motioned towards the building and I sigh as the real world comes rushing back in like a tide on the shore, destroying my sand castle. “Right,” I mutter and then proceed to shakily open the door and climb out of the car. When I get to the curb he holds out his arm to help me up. © 2010 Rose Elizabeth |
