Swimmer

Swimmer

A Poem by James Rosecrans

I wake up to another day
Guess I’m okay; I just can’t see straight -
I think great, another chance to create
Another opportunity to lose another game,
Where I have to choose between -
What I want and you want
But I can’t stand the way it haunts me
When I play selfishly, then helplessly -
Have to lay awake wondering sleeplessly -
If I could have done more, just a little more
That’s all anyone ever asked for
Just do what’s right, and hope that maybe -
You might agree and see the good intent -
In me, ‘cause I try hard, I really do
But the sad truth is despite that
There’s no joy in you
There's no smile on this face
There’s no point to this chase
There’s no finish line -
At the end of this race
