After All These Years

After All These Years

A Poem by Rosauro Brillantes
"

A poem for a friend who turned into someone more important

"
He sat in the passenger seat waiting for something to occur
Maybe the sky will fall from its place
Maybe the emptiness will be replaced
Maybe the odds are stacked against him like the worst hand in poker
Was he thinking too much? Or was this just an anxiety attack...
Placed a few years ago
With a broken heart, and a broken body
Left alone in the dark
Sulking alone in the lobby
So he took a glance to his left - right where she sat
Just in her palm she held a device
Pressed it thrice and said "Let's go"
He didn't though.
He looked her in the eyes
He couldn't take this much longer
They both knew they were living lies
He placed his hand on her cheek and kissed her by the lips
He felt his temperature slip
He knew his face was flushed and now he had regrets
Now he'll have to face the after-effects
So he pulled away and waited for the yelling to come
But there was none
Wanting to get out of the car and pretend it didn't happen
He prayed that she wouldn't start snappin'
So he risked a look at her
And she was looking right on back
Everything seemed like a blur
But then, out of her mouth came the words he did not expect
He was used to the feeling of reject
She just quietly sat
"F**k, why did I just kiss her?" he thought
Then she said...
"After all these years we've known each other, I wondering when you'd do that..."
