Rosa and the Great Escape!!

Rosa and the Great Escape!!

A Story by poetry-kiddo alienbaba
"

Mother.....after her marriage. Travel to Kuwait for a job. Family could do with an additional source of income.

"

Rosa...she quotes and utters metaphors
and allegorical statements, 19 to the dozen.....
Example....if someone has given an excuse for not doing his job properly...
mother would say...`Nachonk noko zalear aangonn vankddem..` that means (Konkanni =English)..`blame it on the uneveness of the dance-floor if u dont know to jive..`
or if someone has been particularly ungrateful after being rendered
a special service......she would say...`kam zalem muntoch Ram-ram`
(ram-ram is a typical light goodbye here)...The Doctor has operated
and has got a casual bye instead of the money-pie. lol.
.......ROSA....wonder what she is doin at this hour....she is in KUWAIT now.....operatin industrial ovens...baking cakes ....
muffins....cookies..for the `SUGAR n SPICE` bakery....
been there in oil-land for 22 years now......walked through Jordan
once when Saddam played his game......
we had given up hope on her.....thought her to be buried under
some coarse oil-laden sand...or worse still....shaterred to smithereens by some stray shell......Dad went through hell here...
I was too young to understand the implications of the gruesome situation....
all the Goans returned back to their homes....dead-tired and sick to the core....but relieved and refreshed upon their warm reception back.....all came back...all but Rosa.....aunty started weeping....
and then after 2 months...there comes she...she with the dark-black hair.....she with the victorious air....Rosa back to her lair....
`granpa....go and heat up some water for me to bathe in, I have not had a hot water bath for 2 months...`---says she...Granpa...runs
to the fire-place....he has seen daughters face....filled with awe at
her courage and gentle-grace...he is all praise for this little girl once
that he had hit out at wildly in a fit of rage when the bucket fell
in the village well.......
Rosa said there were shops of Gold bein looted in broad daylight..
people, held death in one hand and their fate in another....jewelerry filled pockets and stolen cash in their jackets ; it was a free for all...
next mornin`....Dad had to bear the brunt of her anger...(shes got it from her father..)..`Is this a kitchen or a piggery? You uncivilized
creatures...u should see the neat Homes of Kuwait...and lil JUJU
did brother never tell u how to hold a knive and fork? ...
I did...I interrupt...but he gets confused with the English way and the American zig-zag method.....
and whos goin to do the dishes I pray....she goes on...
a new conflict everyday, a conflicting new day....
so Surekha comes and washes the clothes...and mamapai cooks
his ol` recipes....mamai helps too ...sometimes...I ask her ones ...Is rice curry and pickle, all that u can make?..Americans and Britishers have a new meal each day....Yes she says.....I`ll cook u all that...
just ask you ma to pay!
and then as the sayin goes...`podlolo render kednach maad sodina`
...the fallen coconut-tree climber never gives up his job...
...Rosa went back to that HELL .....Saddam had finished or had been asked to end his game rather...and compensation of a Lakh n a half
came to my father.....which he spent with relish.....odd-debts and
cleanin the house of dead-rats..
The House.....wonder if that crack has widened since the last earthquake.......wonder if the cotton-tree is still looming menancingly
over the oven-baked tiles of the red-roof.
wonder if those guava trees have been picked clean of their fruit
by my friends the bats....wonder whether those gree snakes still
reside in the Tamarind tree....wonder if JUJU is still waitin for `Mummy`.

this write is so full of underlying stories, of war, of families, of life foriegn to each though there is a mentioning and a mingling of both as it's a life in Iraq and it's written by an english speaking mind, I wonder where you learned to speak and write English and play guitar so well, seemingly so much more below the surface with you, this write is incredible, my pleasure to read.

Heya SM i am touched :)
We live as we can... and treat our family sometimes as more than we should... but we don't always see others with "Today's" eyes, most times its through the tears of yesterdays' "goodbyes".

You are a great story teller...I am saddened at what the money system does to families...I love those wonderings at the end, makes the story continue on in my imagination as I see the Tamarind and Guava trees filled with life.
