Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet

A Poem by ron

Romeo and Juliet

Could age be so important,

when it comes to love?

Does the deference in age between two lovers really matter?

What of the hearts and love between two people,

just because of the difference in their age?

How many loves have to suffer,

because others have shunned them for the difference in their age?

-Sighs-

My love knows no bounds,

my feelings are blind to another’s looks.

My love for another is measured in heart beats and not years.

Yes, well it doesn't, and it shouldn't, assuming we are a matching of equals and both are consenting adults. However, try being a woman sometime, Ron. No one thinks much of an old dude like Michael Douglas taking up with someone young, try it the other way around. Ironically, the match is much more appropriate, older woman to younger man, as long as he doesn't talk, lol. Point made.

Ron, I am well aware of dating and age differences. I remember a time I was 17 and my significant other was 48, and no - age is just a number. We matched each other perfectly - both in our interests and spirit.

For some maybe. Thank you for your kind encouragement :)
I'm not sure if this is relevant to the poem (though I kinda think it is) but I've read and/or seen about twenty of The Bard's plays and R&J is by far my least-favourite of the lot...God I hate that play...I suppose I'm just too cynical to see the romance in it, but I definitely felt the sentiment in your words...I'm not sure if this is relevant either, but birthday number 40 is not far off for me, yet I still get carded for pretty much everything except breathing...people tell me I'll appreciate it (when? when I'm 70??) and joke that I could be hitting on schoolgirls, and that I've probably been admired by many without knowing it...now say I met one of those schoolgirls and fell hard for her...the most likely scenario would be me getting charged, and even if I did have a real relationship with one, I'd be branded as a sugar-daddy or skirt-chaser or one of those monikers...unless of course I was a celeb, as KL mentioned below...age really should be nothing but a number, but like many of life's platitudes, people preach it but they don't back it up...I'm not sure if this piece is autobiographical, but if it is, I definitely feel your words...the last line wraps it up perfectly...well done ron.

I feel the emotion and heartache in this one. I am experiencing something similar in my life and I agree age should not matter. It's the size of your heart and how you connect on a real meaningful level that matters. For me a big draw is sharing the same sense of humor, and the man in my life who is six years older is a dorky goofball like me :) And our ages don't matter to each other. More people need to look beyond the surface of their fellow humans. True love is about heart and spirit. Very much enjoyed your poem, friend. I agree with your words.

my sister can relate to this poem so well. Currently the love of her life she is kept from because he is several years older. This poem rings true. Who cares about age? Its just a stupid number!!!!!

Age should not matter, but to many it does. This is a great write expressing just how trivial things can get in the way of someone's heart. Great write, Ron! xo :)

Age should not matter but it does. You have to consider so many factors when facing life and love.Sometimes when you love someone so much you have to put their best interests before your own.Love actually does not conquer all contrary to popular belief sometimes love gets its a*s kicked by circumstance.Just my thoughts I could be wrong I have been on a very few occasions lol

I completely agree with you Vidya.
Age should not matter Ron, but in our culture it does seem to make a difference. I think it has a better chance of surviving when the man is the older one, as women age more quickly in most circumstances and the man ends up being looked at more favorably by our society. My son was married to a woman who was almost 20 years older than he and it did not last. It is good to know you are more adaptable than some.
Now, a Mrs. Robinson is a different story.......LOL
