Again into the shadowsA Story by ronInspired by NoelHC’s poem “Picket Fence”.Again
into the shadows
Off in the distant shadows, sit the ones who are of
little use, or not needed as much as they use to be.
They are the ones that are needed or wanted for a
short time, then like an old coat they are gently hung in the closet and thought
of from time to time like an old memory that surfaces.
These are the ones who know that being needed for a
short time is their part in life. They fill a space in another’s needs, and for
a short time it seems like the new person could be the one, and they never have
to return back to the shadows.
But it never lasts; it won’t be long before someone
more permanent slips into their place. A sad good bye or, “thanks
for being a friend when I needed one” are
all the shadow people get. For most, that is enough because they know soon they
will be needed again for a short time to help another through a difficult or
not so difficult time in their life.
Either way the shadow people are needed in the same
way a step is needed to help someone reach who they were meant to reach. They are the carpenters of the heart, and they are
very skilled at their craft. But when the new doors are hung and the cracks are
filled and smoothed over…they will be asked (ever so gently) to move on.
They bow their head with great respect and quietly
slip back into the shadows to await another heart whose cracks need to be
filled and smoothed over. © 2014 ronAuthor's Note
