IrriationA Story by KateI think a lot of people in high school have felt this way. This isn't really a story, but I thought it's more than a poem.
I take my seat in the the old desk.
It's covered in crude images. I sigh. Since when did immaturity become the norm? My classmates file into the room. I smile at my friends, they grin back. Some kids strut in, past the bell. Leering grins are on their face. They pass my desk, muttering, "nerd." Since when is being smart a crime? I ignore it. It doesn't bother me. I'm practical. They turn their attention to someone else. There is a girl in the classroom. She's loud. She doesn't fit into society's norm. She's their victim. I watch as the teasing commences. My friends and I, we tell them to quite it. We tell her to ignore them. They're just losers, we say. Neither party listens. She argues. They yell back. They laugh. I worry. © 2011 Kate |
