Fireman's BluesA Story by Heather ClaytonHe crouched down and began starting the fire with his cigarette...
Today was a day like any other. Phillip began his morning routine with coffee and some toast.
He was out the door before he knew it, whistling to a morning tune on the radio. He was hoping all was calm at work.
When Phillip approached the firestation, he began talking to his coworkers about the night he had had. Nothing short of watching the news and reading about the latest blaze of fires set by some unknown suspect.
He grabbed the morning paper and read...still no clues as to who started the fires.
Just then, he was called suddenly...would today be his last day at work?
He put on his uniform and went into the firebus.
As they drove along a lot was going through his mind.
"Ratcliff and Second." The channel hummed.
As they approached Ratcliff he could see the fires mounting high into the sky.
Not a good way to spend a morning.
He jumped out and ran to the fire; the homeowner who was outside and looking frantic...just waived.
He began pumping water onto the house from a huge hose.
The fire was put out.
As the police approached, he heard the homeowner crying..."I've lost everything..."
Then he gave a little snicker.
When he went home that evening, he stopped by a house, pulled out a smoke and began throwing it into the lawn, where a small fire set.
He was after all, in need of a job. © 2013 Heather Clayton |
