HINTS OF SPRING

HINTS OF SPRING

A Poem by Marie
"

50 year old poem about spring...

"

Winter grass is white along the path.

Earth is frozen. In the still, cold air

I catch a scent, elusive, yet familiar,

Fragile sweetness, scarcely even there.

Spring is sending messengers aloft,

Heralding the coming of new weather,

Honeysuckle fingers feeling gently,

South breeze blowing lightly as a feather,

Whispering “Be patient…she comes soon…”

The gloomy day takes on a glow of cheer,

The winter grass seems greener where I walk,

All for knowing spring will soon be here.

Author's Note

Marie
This is the first poem I ever had published, fifty years ago. It was in a little magazine called “The Christian,” which is now defunct—as so many of them are. I got $2.00 for it, which wasn’t real money even in those days, but it was one of the most exciting things that ever happened to me.

Thank you.
i really like your imagery, Marie, but then you are so consistent with the visuals....i always try to teach my students to be visual.

and yes, 2 dollars seems like not too much...but just the idea of getting paid for writing when it is poetry...that is enough.

Two dollars was a lot more in those days. And just getting published was fantastic...

Marie if you had taken that $2.00 and bought shares in a little company called Microsoft ...etc..

Im kidding. This is delightful. I especially liked the line -
"I catch a scent, elusive, yet familiar,
Fragile sweetness, scarcely even there." - which we can all relate too I think.

"Honeysuckle fingers feeling gently" - very pretty imagery.

The final stanza is a beautiful bow on this winter/spring bouquet.
Thank you for sharing this dear Marie.
