Oh, Lilac by MarySusan Williams-Migneault (c) 2001/Revised 2008

A Poem by RHP

Oh, Lilac, never should I want to fill
A crystal vase with your barely purple petals
Or sweeten the staleness of winter’s passing
With your elusive fragile fragrance.

No, Lilac, never should I awaken
The sting of your sharp green switches,
Brandishing scarlet lines into tender
Half-moons of whiteness, wrapped tightly
Around legs stretched on tip-toes
Trying to escape the wrath of one offended
By youth’s tattle-tales and lies.

Oh, Lilac, how I love thee none-the-less
Nature’s palette filling each bouquet with
Spring’s first breath of God’s delight
Dripping with forgiveness in dawn’s waking mist
Evaporating the tears of fading innocence

As tender sun scorched petals fall from Grace.
