AmeliaA Poem by RobM
The historian said to the intrepid heroine, what is it that you wish to accomplish?
And, Amelia, her large eyes searching the man's face as if for an answer, said: I wanted to cross the steady Atlantic to bunting-swept Paris, the city of beautiful dangers and rain-swept boulevards. I wanted to see the sun in the morning over the Atlantic, I wanted to be the first woman to navigate the rain-peened sea, I wanted to soar with the terns and hover with the gulls, the winds heavy over the vast ocean, the horizons afire in the mornings and dark as ink in the dusks; arrival would be like a parade, I imagined. Crowds of cheering fans hallooing the heroine and aviator they had from a great distance admired, as great as the distance between the continents, between the windy poles of New York and Paris, between my voice now and the listener at home, dear, Sir. His or her breath the wind that carries the wings of my craft every time I go up, every time I breach a new boundary, a meridian. © 2024 RobMReviews
