A Poem by R. L. Ives

No Imagination?
No, education!
No creativity?
No, conformity!
No imagination?
No, indoctrination!
We know what's best.
As you will see.

They think they are right.
Because the all children lie.
They think they are right
And then wonder why.
And then wonder why the children don't try.

They are the ones we're told to trust.
So out of touch with reality.
They are they are the ones in whom we must.
Every seat will be full every day of the week.
We know what's best.
Just watch, you will see.

They think they are right.
Because all the children lie.
They think they are right
And then wonder why.
And then wonder why the children cry.

Go to the office and take your pill
She hides the scars.
He can't sit still.
Everyone is scared of the class bully.
We know what's best.
We know you will see.

They think they are right.
Because all the children lie.
They think they are right
And then wonder why.
And then wonder why the children die.

No Imagination?
No, education!
No creativity?
No, conformity!
No imagination?
No, indoctrination!
We know what's best.
We'll make you see.

I like the message, but part of it is not clear what you mean . "The children lie"about what?) It is not clear what you are referring too, nor is there a clear implication of what you're referring too. Also, it is a very is simply worded peice, not much if any personification. I like the first and last stanza (the same thing) because they have a message. But still not a very exceptional peice to the average reader overall.

Hi R.L.,

I teach fourth grade and I love the kids. Yes they are imps and yes some of them have big problems but I think sometimes people don't appreciate that there are thousands of dedicated teachers out there. We spend our money to help educate and sometimes clothe and feed kids. We are very aware of bullying and make every effort to nip it in the bud. We worry about them, we wonder what became of them when they leave and we teach them. Teaching for most is a calling and I cannot imagine doing anything else. We further our educations so that we are teaching in the most effective way possible. We are also in light of the economy learning how to do more with less.

That being said where I do agree with the idea of indoctrination is the emphasis on standardized testing, especially on young children. And that does remove the creativity from the classroom. I wrote a poem/play a few years ago that the kids performed on our literacy night. We made our little costumes, birds, bunnies etc. out of construction paper, practiced and we performed. I can't do things like that anymore because we need TIME ON LEARNING. I miss that. There is more accountability for teachers and that's a good thing. We balance the kids, the curriculum, the administration and the parents. Still, your poem is effective, evocative and well structured. Now go out there and hug a teacher! Really go on now.

Well thank you, so sweet of you to say. And I return the sentiment in kind.
